Local group of veterans asks for permission to create community emergency response team

PRINCETON, WV (WOAY) – A group of retired veterans from Mercer County are attempting to create a community emergency response team.

A community emergency response team is a group of volunteers that agrees to help with local services like fire, EMS and even the police. Three veterans asked the Mercer County Commission to give them permission to operate in their communities.

One of the veterans, Nicholas Fields, says he wants to be able to help out where he can.

“We showed up today to discuss starting a CERT team in Mercer County to help with our community, especially in this time of this pandemic. We can help out with testing, help out the local fire department, police department as well as EMS,” Fields said.

The County Commission and local emergency services plan to consider the matter further in future meetings.
