Local doctor shares thoughts on COVID-19 related illness in children

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert to physicians on a rare but potentially deadly condition linked to COVID-19 in children.

The illness, which the CDC calls “multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children,” or MIS-C, has been reported in at least 19 states. The children displaying these symptoms, 90 percent tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies.

“They’re seeing red lips, red eyes, red cheeks, and that’s not something you normally see in children. It’s a very rare disease. Kids who had a fever and flu-like symptoms. 6 weeks ago they weren’t getting tested for COVID-19 so these children now especially in New York are very sick and they’re testing them now for COVID-19 antibodies,” said Dr. Anye Amjad.
