BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Raleigh County Prevention Coalition invites the community to Keep Writing Your Story, their Saturday, July 13 prevention and recovery event at Freedom Skate Park.
Embracing life through all circumstances is a powerful movement.
“We’ve all been impacted as a state and as a city of Beckley by the opioid epidemic,” said Coalition chair Amanda Hammons. “We will be bringing together prevention and recovery. We see how the messages intertwine, and we want to support both at the same time so we can have a more lasting impact.”
This free 10 am to 6 pm event is designed to bring hope with live speakers, free food and a skate jam. You’ll find plenty of resources and education — including Medicaid additions, disease testing, recovery housing, mental health and suicide prevention.
“We’ve got five local bands supporting the cause and the people,” Hammons said. “We’re hoping to make it fun enough with the music and the activities for families that we can all come together and share the joy of what we’ve come through.”
There is such community support that every one the community advocate approached about taking part was on board. Hammons thanks the city of Beckley for supporting this cause and all of RCPC’s efforts.
“It all came together so large it’s almost a festival within a few months — shows me that the community has a voice,” she said. “They care about this message and they truly want to support it. It means the world.”
According to the RCPC chair, activities are a prevention tool.
“We are bringing together something more to do in Beckley,” Hammons said. “Activities support people in recovery, activities bring the community together. If we can all come together we can be stronger for the future.”
