Victor, WV (WOAY) The fall equinox occurs at 8:05 Eastern time tonight! That means it gets darker from here on out until the spring equinox.
This time of year has always meant preparation for the dark season, and WOAY stopped by the family-owned J&J Hardware in Victor this afternoon to check on the trends as the season shifts. Co-owner Michael Othman says the shift to fall means more indoor and outdoor maintenance, cold weather prep, and more hunting supplies.
“So we’re noticing that the metal roofing has changed and it’s changing over to lumber a lot, building a lot of decks and doing a lot of tree to work outside that and also a lot of indoor work is happening. So Wooster paint products are flying off the shelves. A lot of people are trying to get that done, as well as people trying to get their chainsaws ready for the fire season. So our mechanic shop is pumping out chainsaws every day now. So quite a bit, quite a bit of shift. And propane sales have picked right up, and our deer products are moving pretty good. We have Antler King here; it evolved into really popular products: A lot of stump lickers and minerals. And it seems like the hunters can’t get enough of it. Our whole corn seems to be going with that as well.”
Of course, we all know that it’s peaches in the summertime and apples in the fall, and J&J Hardware is hosting an Apple Butter Festival on October 10th at 101 Victor Post Office Road, just on the outskirts of Ansted.
What better way to celebrate the changing of the season?
Co-owner Savannah Othman says the apple butter takes a full day of fun to make.
“So the second Saturday in October is going to be our second annual Apple Butter Festival. You bring an empty mason jar, and we will fill it up with fresh-cooked apple butter. We come, and we start at like 5:00 in the morning. It’s normally ready by probably 3:00 in the afternoon. We’ll have some fun games. Vendors will be set up, just all sorts of fall activities, apple butter-themed.
