We’re seeing a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon with a few showers tossed in in the southern coalfields, stretching into southwestern Virginia.
Temperatures are pretty close to the normal this afternoon. Later tonight, lows will drop into the middle 50s, right on the normal for middle September – the cool mornings of last week a memory.
Tomorrow, the chance for showers will be a little better than what we’re seeing today, a trend that will last through Wednesday. The reason for the rain chances is a low-pressure center that is sitting off the Virginia and North Carolina coast.
It’s not expected to move very fast or very far, but eventually it will push offshore and head to the northeast. There isn’t a lot of moisture for the low to work with and there won’t be many showers, so rainfall totals according to the models that we look at are low.
After the coastal low is gone, the skies will clear for the most part and the temperatures will warm into the lower 80s for the highs in most areas. That includes our Fabulous Football Friday, which will once again be a warm one. But the days of afternoon highs in the 80s are short, as there are some indications that another low-pressure center will push to the north of the region, dragging a front through and triggering chances for showers on Sunday and Monday. There is some disagreement regarding this next system, and we’ll continue to track it for you as the week goes on. If it does trigger some clouds and showers, the extra cloud cover will keep the highs in check on both Sunday and Monday as we end the extended forecast. Slightly cooler temperatures would follow the front.
