White Sulphur Springs, WV (WOAY) On the evening of Friday, June 12, in the field, just outside the Performance Center at the Greenbrier, the national football team of Iraq was preparing for the group stage of the World Cup, where they’ll be facing off against France, Norway, and Senegal in what experts are calling the group of death.
The group earned that deadly title for the serious competition and high-profile rosters that all four teams bring to the global tournament.
It isn’t often that West Virginia hosts a national football team like Iraq’s. FIFA and the Greenbrier planned to host an event last Friday where fans could watch the Iraq team as they prepared for their upcoming matches. The community event was unfortunately cancelled due to severe weather, but once the rain cleared, Newswatch had a brief window to see the world-class athletes hone their craft in our wild and wonderful West Virginia backyard.
Iraq will face Norway this Tuesday in Massachusetts, then France on June 22nd, and Senegal on the 26th.
