Interested in a law enforcement career: Attend RCSO’s ‘Train with a Deputy’

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office has a new program, Train with a Deputy, kicking off Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, for those interested in a law enforcement career.

It prepares you for the journey.

Complete a practice fitness test, take a behind-the-scenes tour of the sheriff’s office and learn what it’s like to be a deputy sheriff.

“I thought it was sort of unfair to people, especially young people who want to be a policeman, but they don’t know how to do it or what’s expected,” said Sheriff Frank Priddy. “This was a good idea for us to have as a community event and let people who are interested find out what they need to do as far as physically, what’s on a written test, look at the place and see if they think that’s a career for them.”

The RCSO is going to hold these Train with a Deputy events once a month, all year long.

“That will prepare them to take a test for whatever department they choose,” the sheriff said. “You need to have an active list of applicants you can hire. This is a good way to do that.”

The department is also partnering with personal trainer Matt Morris.

“He is going to go over what someone needs if they’re struggling on the run, struggling on the pushups or sit-ups,” said Priddy. “He can tell them, ‘You need to do this three times a week, you need to do this to be consistent. That way, they can meet their goals and be successful in going through the testing process.”
