Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – Heavy rain and slick highways can lead to lethal consequences for motorists.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 11,000 motor vehicle accidents occur each year due to tire-related issues.
Many of these accidents could have been prevented with proper tire maintenance.
The tread on your tires affects your vehicle’s handling and shows visible signs of wear in advance.
Consumer Reports recommends that you inspect your tires’ tread monthly to check for signs of wear.
The easiest way is to use a quarter.
Put George Washington’s head into one of the big grooves on the tire.
If the top of his head is flush with the tread, you have about 4/32nds of an inch of tread left, meaning you have enough grip remaining to drive in rain or snow.
If you can see space above Washington’s head, visit a local car care center for a proper inspection and tire replacement.
