How to lower your screentime

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – Freezing temperatures and school cancellations are leaving kids with extra time to play video games and watch TV.

A few extra minutes of screen time isn’t always bad, but too much of it can impact sleep, diet, reduce physical activity, and cause mood changes.

Experts say finding a balance is instrumental in maintaining your child’s physical and emotional well-being on snow days.

Parents and kids can work together to designate screen-free periods like mealtime and bedtime. Find ways to encourage active screen use by finding interactive games and apps to get kids moving. This will help children and parents stay physically active while stuck indoors.

Educators also recommend that families engage in non-screen activities like reading, crafts, and puzzles.

Winter can sometimes feel like a hibernation period, but it can also serve as the perfect opportunity to balance screen time with physical activity.
