OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a hot and hazy afternoon around the region, and today the humidity level ramped up a bit, making it feel like it was in the 90s in some areas. There was also that haze in the skies as the smoke from fires in Canada continued to be transported into our area by the flow around high pressure to our northwest. The smoke could cause some difficulties for people with breathing issues, but for now, the air quality is not adversely affected. Tonight, we’ll drop into the mid-60s, close to the normal but a couple of degrees above.
Tomorrow, we’ll turn up the heat a bit more, and many areas will get close to or a shade above 90 degrees. Of course, with the extra bit of humidity, it will feel even warmer, and if you have to be outside in the early to mid-afternoon, make sure to take the usual precautions.
The smoke will continue to be a minor issue as well. Lows tomorrow night will once again be in the mid- to upper 60s.
Friday will be another warm day, but with the approach of a front from the northwest, the end of the day will feature chances for showers and storms.
When the clouds and rain arrive will determine the eventual high temperature. The longer it stays sunny, the more like Thursday it will be. I think the rain arrives during the late afternoon and evening, which means that highs will be near 90 degrees once again. More smoke will be in the skies; in fact, Friday will be the worst day for the smoke as a thick plume pushes into the state.
The weekend features more rain chances as another system moving to our north brings a cool front into the region, and a series of disturbances associated with the approaching front could produce strong to severe storms.
The main threat with the storms is the same as it was last weekend – heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding. With the cloud cover, it will be a few degrees cooler. Highs will be in the lower 80s at the end of the forecast.
