OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) –Â The heat wave continued today around the area, as high temperatures once again hovered around the 90-degree mark everywhere.

Even the traditionally cooler areas like Marlinton were in the mid-to-upper 80s this afternoon. Lows tonight will be around 70 degrees, as they have been for the past couple of nights.
Tomorrow, we’ll be back around 90 degrees as the heat wave continues to be the dominant weather story in our area. It will be similar to today, but we’ll toss in a chance for afternoon and evening showers and storms. The storms will be scattered, but those that develop will be capable of producing strong winds and small hail, despite the warm lower level of the atmosphere. The updrafts with the storm could be strong enough to keep the hail from melting all the way to the ground. The storms are part of another low and front that will push through the region over the holiday weekend. We’ll see multiple days with showers and storms that could be strong to severe.

As the extended forecast goes on, the weekend front will push through the area and then stall to our south. This will allow our temperatures to drop off a bit, although they’ll still be a few degrees above normal, generally in the lower to middle 80s. The stalled-out front is also close enough to the area to give us continuous chances for showers and storms through the rest of the extended forecast.

Rain chances will be there all day, but there will be breaks. Outdoor plans should still be possible, but an umbrella or an indoor alternative will be a good idea. The extra moisture is not a bad thing, as parts of the area are still in severe drought, although there was improvement in today’s latest drought monitor.

Much of that was because we saw a record for rainfall in Beckley in June.

The wet and warm weather continues beyond the extended forecast as well.
