Hospice of Southern WV recognized for 5-star care

Beckley, WV (WOAY) – Hospice of Southern West Virginia has been recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for its 5-star quality of care, making it one of the top hospices in the nation.

Hospice of Southern West Virginia is there for those who have been given a serious or terminal diagnosis. They provide physical, spiritual, and emotional care for both patients and their loved ones.

“We’re there for them in what is truly one of the most vulnerable times of life and really important times of life in helping not only the patient cope with the diagnosis and the families as well, and helping them figure that all out together.”

Knowlton says the team at Hospice of Southern West Virginia takes tremendous pride in offering five-star care to its patients. They are one of only 71 hospices in the country to achieve that rating every reporting period since 2022, ranking among the best in the nation.

“I just think this is the most amazing group of people who are so incredibly dedicated to what they do day in and day out, and they bring their whole selves into caring for people. And it’s special. And it’s the same care that you see in the homes or here at Bowers Hospice House. You see behind the scenes here in how they advocate for their patients and how they care for their patients every single day.”

Another part of that five-star care is helping loved ones with the grieving process.

“We make sure that we help the loved ones, the families, the friends who want that kind of assistance, that we walk them through all of those first things. The first birthday without a loved one, the first holiday, the first special moment that the loved one is missing from the table or from the bleachers or… whatever the life event may be, and that we’re helping them with coping skills and we’re helping them understand that grief is everything. It’s happy moments and sad moments. It’s tears, and it’s anger. It’s joy, and it’s not. And all of that can happen in the span of 5 minutes. And it’s okay.”

If you or a loved one has a serious diagnosis, you don’t have to go through it alone. Visit hospiceofsouthernwv.org or call 304-255-6404 for more information.
