Historic barn in New River Gorge National Park burns, public assistance requested

HINTON, WV (WOAY) A barn belonging to the National Park Service burned down last night in Summers County at the historic Richmond Hamilton farm.

The fire was reported at around 8 p.m. last night between Hinton and Sandstone Falls. According to the Summers County Fire Department, the barn was fully engulfed when trucks arrived on the scene. It did not take long to put out the fire, but the structure was a complete loss.

Park Rangers and members of the Jumping Branch/Nimitiz fire station also responded to the fire.

The barn was built from hand-hewn chestnut logs and was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
