High School basketball player charged with assault

Grant County, WV (WOAY) – A West Virginia high school student has been charged with assault for his actions on a high school basketball court.

On February 27, 2025, the West Virginia State Police took a complaint over the phone from parent stating her 17-year-old juvenile son had been assaulted while playing basketball at Union High School in Grant County the prior evening. She told troopers that she had to take her son to the hospital for “profuse bleeding” and was later diagnosed with a broken nose.

She also told troopers that the incident was caught on video and in her opinion the players actions were intentional and unacceptable.

She provided the video of the incident along with other video showing the same boy being aggressive multiple times. She advised she wished to pursue criminal charges.

Troopers reviewed the video and identified the player in question as 18-year-old Gage Ketterman.

In the video Ketterman could be seen using his elbow to single out and target players from the opposing team; either after or away from the main area of play and strike them in the head or face. Troopers determined Ketterman’s conduct was both intentional and deliberate in attempting to cause serious bodily injury to more than one individual, numerous times that evening.

On Sunday April 6, 2025, WV State Troopers arrested and charged Gage Ketterman with one count of malicious assault and two counts of attempted malicious assault.

Ketterman is free under a $12,500 bond posted in magistrate court.
