Heavy rains expected this week with flash-flood threat continuing

We’re tracking widespread rain showers and storms across the region this evening, and the wet weather isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Rain is expected each day through Thursday, which aligns with June being one of our historically rainiest months. While tomorrow may bring storms to fewer people than today, Tuesday is shaping up to be another widespread soaking for many in southern West Virginia.

From now through Thursday, expect daily chances for storms, with the stormiest days currently looking like Tuesday and Thursday. Monday and Wednesday may offer some dry breaks for parts of our area, but we still can’t rule out scattered storms. We’re already keeping an eye on severe storm potential for Tuesday and Thursday, with damaging winds as the primary threat. Gusty storms may knock down limbs or power lines, especially in more vulnerable areas.

Flash flooding will also remain a concern each day this week due to abundant atmospheric moisture. Some storms could produce very heavy rainfall in a short amount of time, leading to flooding in low-lying areas, creeks, streams, and water crossings. If you encounter water on the road, remember: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” No destination is worth risking your life in floodwaters.

We’ll continue monitoring the situation closely and will bring you the latest updates as conditions evolve.
