OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – More showers and storms are filling up the skies over the western part of the state, and these are now entering our area this evening. More showers and storms are coming into the area from the southwest and southeast as well, courtesy of a middle-level disturbance pushing from west to east through the state. As the evening goes on, all areas will see a chance for heavy rain. While the Flood Watch is only in effect for Raleigh, Wyoming, and McDowell Counties, I think everyone has a chance to see some sort of flooding issues tonight. The other big story in the weather is the cooler air that is invading the region. With a strong storm forming off the Atlantic coast (our first Nor’easter of the season) and combining with a strong area of high pressure over eastern Canada, cold air is being brought into the region and is running up against the mountains, a situation known as cold air damming. Lows tonight will be in the lower 50s.
Tomorrow will start with more rain, but as the day goes on, the disturbance that is giving us such a wet night will move away, and the Canadian high will take over our weather.
The skies will clear by the afternoon, but despite the sunshine, the northerly winds will keep temperatures cool. We’ll see highs in the lower 60s. Tomorrow night will feature jacket weather with lows in the mid-40s.
The rest of the extended forecast will also be dry, and the early part of the seven-day outlook will feature temperatures that are just as cool as what we’ll see tomorrow. That means the Friday night football weather will be what many people might expect for football season here: a nice sun-splashed start to the tailgate and a cool walk back to the car after the game. The weekend should also be nice, with similar conditions. By the beginning of next week, there will be a warm-up, with highs rising into the mid-to-upper 70s by next Wednesday and lows rising into the mid-50s. The next chance for rain will be just after the end of the forecast, as another low approaches from the northwest at that time.
