Guns stolen from Vietnam veteran’s Meadow Bridge home

FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – When it comes to home invasions — if it’s of value and an easy getaway — burglars will try to take it, usually things easily converted to cash.

Meadow Bridge homeowner Charles Barnett had some of the most frequently stolen pieces taken from his home this week.

The perps ransacked his house to get what they wanted.

“Had some guns stolen,” Barnett said. “Somehow they pulled the screen off. They came in through the window.”

A Fayette County Deputy Sheriff is investigating the breaking and entering at the Vietnam Vet’s home.

“Trace the serial numbers of the guns down to find out if somebody wants to pawn them, sell them, or keep them for a keepsake,” said Barnett. “Might have been all they could carry were those guns — I guess that’s what they wanted. I thought I had a secure place, but evidently, I didn’t.”

Home break-ins are on the rise. Criminals may look for ways to get into anything open, like a window. Make sure you secure your windows and doors.

According to Barnett, he also had tools underneath his carport and expired medication stolen last year.

“Hindsight’s 100 percent, I guess I’ll try to get some type of a camera or something,” he said. “I thought people had the sense they wouldn’t do this. You try to work and get stuff done for yourself, and everybody else wants to break it.”

These nighttime crime sprees need to stop. But the Vietnam vet says he’s okay being in his home.

“I feel safe. If anybody tries to come they’re not going to feel safe. Just people breaking in when I’m not there, that’s what concerns me.”
