Greenbrier Opens Ashford Short Course

White Sulphur Springs, WV (WOAY) – The Greenbrier held its grand opening Wednesday of its newest golf offering, the Ashford Short Course. The nine-hole, walking-only loop of par 3 holes is open to both Sporting Club members and resort guests.

The course’s name pays tribute to when the resort was transformed into Ashford General Hospital (named after Army physician Colonel Bailey K. Ashford) during World War II. Patients were able to benefit from the property’s golf courses, pool, and tennis courts while they recovered.

Among those in attendance for the grand opening was John Smoltz, the Baseball Hall of Famer who is a Sporting Club member. He took the ceremonial first tee shot en route to what would be a tap-in for par, saying he always enjoys coming to Southern West Virginia.

All holes on the course pay tribute to notable architects and courses from around the world. Greenbrier Sporting Club Vice President & General Manager Larry Klein says it’s a great option for golfers who want to play a quick round, or simply work on their short game.
