Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department and local emergency agencies respond to major diesel spill following tractor trailer crash

Greenbrier County, WV (WOAY) Greenbrier County authorities are responding to a major diesel spill following a tractor-trailer crash early this morning.

Greenbrier County Sheriff Bart Baker says the wreck happened around 6:00 a.m. near mile marker 174 on Interstate 64 westbound.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a trailer carrying containers of diesel fuel had broken loose from the truck and slid into the median.

Officials say 18 containers were damaged or overturned, spilling an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Lewisburg Fire Department, White Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and Fairlea EMS.

State and county agencies were also called in to help contain the spill.

Despite those efforts, officials say some of the diesel has entered storm drains and made its way into Howard’s Creek.

Crews are now working to stop the contamination from reaching the nearby Greenbrier River.

Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to continue their work.
