Greenbrier County Health Department issues public notice after a raccoon tested positive for rabies

Greenbrier County, WV (WOAY) – The Greenbrier County Health Department reports a raccoon captured in the area has tested positive for rabies.  

According to the health department, the raccoon was collected in the 24931 zip code area, including cities such as Clintonville, Alta, Smoot, Kieffer, Piercys, and Meadow Bluff.

The health department advises citizens to take the following precautions:   

  • Avoid all contact with wildlife, as bats and raccoons are the most common carriers.   
  • Immediately wash any animal bites with soap and water and report to your primary health care provider or the health department.   
  • Vaccinate pets and livestock to protect them and yourself. 

The department reports a neighboring county also received a positive case.
