Governor Patrick Morrisey endorses bill geared to help veterans become teachers

Charleston, WV (WOAY)—Governor Patrick Morrisey held an event Wednesday to promote legislation establishing a West Virginia program to help veterans transfer their leadership skills to the classroom.

Students, lawmakers, supporters, and two teachers who previously served in the armed forces joined the Governor at Hedgesville Middle School for the ceremonial signing of Senate Bill 765.

SB 765 would implement the Troops-to-Teachers program in the Mountain State.

Troops to Teachers is a nationwide initiative that assists service members and veterans in navigating the teacher certification process.

The program allows them to gain classroom experience while completing the requirements to become employed as K-12 teachers.

In an official media release, Governor Morrisey says, “Quality teachers are foundational to educational success, and our veterans can bring their unique background and experiences to educate the next generation of West Virginians.”
