CHARLESTON, WV (WOAY)- Governor Patrick Morrisey gave an update on the status of flood recovery across southern West Virginia just a few minutes ago.
The big news, there is one confirmed fatality. The governor is not identifying that person until the family is notified. He said there are other people still unaccounted for.
The governor said he has talked to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and said the federal government has committed to assisting with it.
Two of the hardest hit areas were McDowell County and Mercer County and Governor Morrisey said both counties are seeing a high number of 911 calls. There are also several 911 centers opened up.
“There are certain shelters in place in McDowell County at the Mountain View High School, at the Houston Methodist Church in Campbell, also at the Reclamation Church in Welch,” explained Governor Morrisey. “We know that there’s also shelter in place at the Mingo Fieldhouse in Williamson. The tug was up near historic levels. We know that there are some challenges. Once again, we’re going to do everything we can to help.”
