Governor Morrisey announces proposed premium reduction for Workers’ Compensation Program

Charleston, WV (WOAY) – Today, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced a significant win for West Virginia employers.

The National Council on Compensation Insurance, or NCCI, has filed a proposed 13.5% decrease in workers’ compensation loss costs, set to take effect January 1, 2026.

This reduction is projected to save employers across the state an estimated $20 million, further strengthening West Virginia’s competitive edge for business growth.

Governor Morrisey stated, “From the start, my administration has focused on attracting jobs and businesses to the Mountain State. This latest cut in workers’ comp premiums continues that mission.”

Since the privatization of the workers’ comp system in 2006, the state has seen more than half a billion dollars in premium savings.

The move marks the 21st consecutive year of rate reductions, representing an 84.9% cumulative decline from pre-reform levels.

West Virginia now ranks third in the nation for the lowest workers’ compensation loss costs, outpacing regional neighbors such as Ohio, Virginia, and Kentucky.

A similar 13.5% reduction for the assigned risk market has also been proposed.
