Governor Morrisey announces Google Data Center Project in Putnam County

Putnam County, WV (WOAY) Governor Patrick Morrisey announces Google has purchased land in Putnam County with approval for a multi-billion-dollar High Impact Development Project.

State leaders say the project marks a significant step in attracting large-scale investment and positioning West Virginia for future industries, including data centers and advanced manufacturing.
While the development is still in its early stages, officials say Google is expected to meet with local leaders as planning moves forward.
According to the governor’s office, Google has committed to covering 100% of the electricity used at the facility, along with funding any necessary upgrades to electrical, water, and sewer systems, ensuring those costs are not passed on to residents.
The company has also pledged to replenish more water than it uses by 2030, supporting long-term water sustainability in the region.
The company reports that similar Google data center projects across the country have created thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions.
The Governor’s office further says the state is also advancing its 50 by 50 energy strategy, a long-term effort to expand West Virginia’s power generation capacity to 50 gigawatts by 2050.
This effort aims to ensure the state has the reliable, affordable energy needed to meet growing demand from emerging industries.
State officials say recent legislation, including House Bill 2014, helped create a more predictable path for projects like this, while the state’s long-term energy strategy aims to support growing demand from industries of the future.
Google representatives say they are still early in the process, but look forward to working with state and local leaders as the project develops.
