Governor Morrisey and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) announced that the buck firearms season will open on Monday, November 24 at a press conference in Charleston.

“Buck firearms season is woven into the fabric of West Virginia,” said Governor Morrisey. “It reflects our respect for the land, our love of the outdoors, and the traditions we pass down from one generation to the next. Here is to a safe and successful season for all.”

Gun buck season runs from November 24th to December 7th in every county except Logan, McDowell, Mingo, and Wyoming, which are closed for hunting deer with firearms, DNR officials announced.

Hunters who bag a buck during the 2025 season are encouraged to participate in the Big Buck Photo Contest for an opportunity to win prizes from the WVDNR. The grand prize winner can choose either a lifetime hunting license or a cabin stay in a West Virginia State Park, with additional chances to win a Bass Pro Shops package.
