Governor Justice signs bill restricting county oversight of agricultural operations

Charleston, WV (WOAY)- Governor Jim Justice has signed into law a bill limiting counties from regulating agricultural operations.

West Virginia’s Republican supermajority Senate fast-tracked Senate Bill 171 without debate or committee oversight.

The legislation bars counties from overstepping state law on agricultural operations.

The bill bans counties from regulating any federal or state-registered pesticide, herbicide, or insecticide.

The legislation has been a source of controversy amid fears that it could remove county zoning oversight that has been a challenge to agriculture and energy projects that residents disapprove of.
