CHARLESTON, WV (WOAY) – As West Virginia honors American’s 250th birthday. Governor Patrick Morrisey is on the road, taking part in celebrations around the state.
“We’ve been trying to cross the state and hit every single media market and make sure that every one of the 55 counties knows that they’re playing a huge role in America’s birthday celebrations,” Gov. Morrisey said in a phone interview from his statewide tour.
The governor has participated in the historic ringing of the bell ceremony at Blennerhassett Island State Park, the Wheeling Symphony in Clarksburg, the Oglebay Salute to Patriotism in Wheeling, and more.
“The reception has been incredible. Since we started America’s 250 celebration, we’ve had many counties step up and do the mural involved in the contest. We had a number of entrants in the poetry contest. There are festival concerts going all across West Virginia,” Gov. Morrisey said. “As we’re doing this, we’re emphasizing the importance of the ideals of our founding fathers and the lengths that they went to to make sure people know that we are fighting for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that each person is endowed by their creator to have those rights.”
Meanwhile in Charleston, the state capitol is celebrating with the nation’s biggest mobile Ferris wheel, live music, and more.
“We’re really trying to celebrate because we believe that this is West Virginia’s moment. With “Country Roads” getting such prominence at the College World Series, and with the national soccer team and teams across the world singing “Country Roads,” we want to make sure people know about all the incredible history coming out of West Virginia and why we’re such a special state,” Gov Morrisey said. “There’s a lot of opportunity for fun for the family, but there’s also a chance to reflect on some of the deeper things.”
As America turns 250 years old, Gov. Morrisey says West Virginia has played a pivotal role in the country’s past, and will play a major role in its future.
“West Virginia is has always had a storied place in America’s past. And I think we truly treasure the principles that the founders had advanced. And the people recognize that it’s so critical to protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Gov. Morrisey said. “We are all really fortunate that West Virginia is able to play such a critical role in our country’s future, and I know that these events that we’re doing are designed to showcase just how special we are.”
