BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – In this wintry season, Raleigh County Parks and Recreation invites you to have a little fun by building a snowman in any of its seven Raleigh County parks.
Ensure the park background is something recognizable (sign, building, overlook), then snap a picture of your snowman and submit it for a chance to win a prize.
“We put it out before this last snow we had. So it’ll continue throughout the wintertime until the snow stops coming; probably Marchish to the end of March, beginning of April, depending on what kind of winter we have,” said Executive Director Molly Williams. “You build a snowman in our parks (and) every time it snows you can put in all of those entries, or if you’re just out and about one day when it snows and you want to pop up a snowman in our parks, go ahead and do so.”
Winter is Williams’ favorite season, including the fun and imaginative part of building a snowman.
“It’s a medium that we don’t get to use very often, we only get to use our creative skills with the snow for a short time,” she said. “So it kind of levels the playing field a little bit. You’re gonna have some experts that are really good at it, but it’s all kind of fun and games anyway.”
Email your picture submissions to events@raleighcountyparks.gov and they will take a look.
“We will choose periodic winners throughout the season, but we’ll have a grand prize at the end. If there is a chance maybe we get a big snowstorm beginning of April, and that’s when all of the big entries come in — we’ll try to wait as long as we can when we know there won’t be any more snow.”
Building a snowman is such a tranquil, freeing feeling.
“Getting out with your family and your friends in nature is always good for the soul and good for your body,” the executive director said. “I think it’s the accumulation of a lot of different things that can be good for people and good for our parks.”
