CHARLESTON, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Public Service Commission has ordered the Gauley River Public Service District to enter into an agreement with West Virginia American Water.
The commission first ordered the utility to enter into an agreement in 2024, which Gauley River unsuccessfully appealed to the state Supreme Court.
West Virginia American Water will now operate the facilities at the utility site.
Sewage from the prison has been leaking in Cannelton Hollow since flooding occurred in 2022.
The utility responsible for sewage service, Kanawha Falls, has also been ordered to enter into an operation and maintenance agreement with West Virginia American Water.
The Public Service Commission approved the sale of Kanawha Falls and two other Fayette County public utilities to West Virginia American Water this month.
