Fourth of July and your pets

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – The Fourth of July is typically always a fun time, but for our furry friends, it’s the worst time of year.

Big booms can startle pets who can’t understand that this is a celebration of our independence.

To them, it’s a threat to their safety. 20% of pets disappear after being scared by a loud noise, and up to 50% of pets are afraid of fireworks. Spot Pet Insurance states that the Fourth of July is the number one day that pets go missing.

However, you can take some steps to protect your pets.

You can keep them inside, in a safe, calming room with their bedding and toys. Also, secure all windows, gates, and doors so they can not escape.

You can also walk your dog early to avoid the noise, check their ID tags and microchip, and even use calming aids if your vet recommends it.

If your pet does get out, don’t panic. Search your neighborhood asap, call shelters and animal control, and post their image online.
