Morgantown, WV (WOAY) – Former West Virginia University offensive lineman Zach Frazier continues to shine on the field at the next level.
According to a media release from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Frazier was presented with the 2024 Joe Greene Great Performance Award at halftime of Saturday’s preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Acrisure Stadium.
The award named after Hall of Fame Great “Mean Joe Greene”, is presented each year to the Steelers’ Rookie of the Year.
Frazier shares the distinction of being only the second center to win the award. The first was Maurkice Pouncey, who won the award in 2010.
“When they announced I won the award last year, I went through and looked at the past winners, all of the names,” said Frazier. “It’s truly an honor to be mentioned in that same group of names. It’s a huge honor.”
Frazier was drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 51st overall pick. In his collegiate career Frazier was a staple for the Mountaineers offense, playing in 47 games over his four college seasons, along with 37 starts.
Frazier stepped into a starting role Week 1 of the season due to injuries at the center position. He started all 15 games he played last year, missing two due to an ankle injury.
“What I was most happy with my rookie year is I got better as the year went on,” said Frazier. “I feel like I kept improving and didn’t make the same mistake twice. I was happy I was able to correct the problems and get better throughout the year.
“But I am hard on myself, I expect to get better this year and keep on improving.”
