Former Hinton Ice House to be renovated by New River Gorge Regional Development Authority

HINTON, WV (WOAY) – The New River Gorge Regional Development Authority received a $440,000 grant to clean up the former Hinton Ice House.

The now abandoned Ice House requires extensive cleanup to be repurposed. The site has harmful chemicals and heavy metals in the soil that needs to be remediated before it can be repurposed.

According to Joe Brouse, executive director of the regional development authority, re-purposing the ice house is an investment for the future of Hinton.

“They envision people coming there, shopping there. There’s potential for an amphitheater there. But it’s also a building that doesn’t have to get torn down. It’s a building that could be put to use and utilized for capital investment and for commerce,” Brouse said.

The project is set to begin this October and has a three year time frame.
