Firework safety tips

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) Every year, fireworks cause thousands of preventable injuries.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission wants us all to celebrate this Independence Day proudly and safely by keeping a few fireworks safety tips in mind:

  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Only use legal consumer fireworks, and follow the instructions on the label.
  • Remember to keep children away from fireworks, including sparklers, which can cause serious burns in seconds.
  • Only light one firework at a time, and move away quickly after lighting.
  • Keep a water bucket or garden hose nearby, in case of fire, and to soak used fireworks.
  • Never relight a dud, and if a firework fails to go off, wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water.
  • Never aim or throw fireworks at people, animals, or buildings.

If you encounter fireworks that appear unsafe, mislabeled, or designed to be held while firing, be sure to report them through saferproducts.Gov.
