It is cold and snowy around southern West Virginia, especially in the northern areas, where the snow is really coming down fast and furious.

Later tonight, a band of heavy snow will set up to our northwest and will overspread the area from northwest to southeast. Snowfall rates with this band will be impressive, and by the time it is through, some areas will be totaling around a half foot in Nicholas County.

Driving on the roads will become hazardous as the night goes on, as temperatures fall into the teens and low 20s. In addition to the cold, there will be gusty winds to make it feel even colder. Some locations will have wind chill values near or even below zero!

Tomorrow, there will still be some isolated snow showers, mainly in the highest elevations of the state, during the morning before tapering off in the afternoon.

The sun will break out tomorrow as well, giving us a nicer feel to the day – as long as we’re inside. If you’re venturing out, you want to have the winter coat handy as highs will top out right around the freezing mark. Some of the ice that forms on the roads tonight and tomorrow morning will melt as the sun combines with the road chemicals to make the driver a little less tricky. But anything that doesn’t dry will freeze over again if it’s not treated, as the lows drop to below the freezing mark once again.
By the middle of the week, a gradual warming trend begins. Highs will push towards the 50-degree mark by Wednesday, and near 60 degrees by Friday. Lows will be in the 40s, well above where the HIGHS are today and tomorrow. The old weather roller coaster is in effect again! As for precipitation, we’re expecting a very small chance for rain Friday night and early Saturday morning, as a weak disturbance pushes through the region. Much better rain chances are in the forecast beginning on Sunday, as a stronger system pushes into the region by that point. Behind the next front, we end the extended forecast slightly cooler.
