Federal judge dismisses Department of Justice lawsuit requesting unredacted voter registration data

Charleston,WV (WOAY) A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit seeking unredacted West Virginia voter registration data.

The case challenged the state’s refusal to release confidential voter information.

Following the ruling, Secretary of State Kris Warner called the decision a victory for voter privacy and election integrity, saying it confirms the state’s legal obligation to protect sensitive voter information while continuing to comply with state and federal election laws.

Back in February, the U.S. Department of Justice requested detailed voter data from states nationwide, including Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and other sensitive information.

Secretary Warner said his office would not release the personal identifying information of registered voters, and in a written response, cited that state law only allows voter lists to be shared in a redacted format and that turning over protected data would violate that law.
