West Virginia (WOAY)- The FDA is warning consumers not to eat certain shrimp sold by Walmart because of possible radioactive contamination.
There are three lots of ‘Great Value’ brand raw frozen shrimp sold in 13 states, including West Virginia.
Consumers should throw them out.
These products include the following product names, lot codes, and best by dates:
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
Repeated low-dose exposure to cesium-137 can elevate cancer risk.
Contact your medical provider if you suspect you’ve been exposed to elevated levels of the radioactive isotope.
This all started when US Customs and Border Protection alerted the FDA that Cs-137 was detected in shipping containers at four U.S. ports.
The FDA then detected it in a sample of breaded shrimp distributed by an Indonesian company.
The FDA stresses that no shrimp in the US food supply has tested positive.
However, it recommends that all products from the company sent after the containers tested positive be recalled.
