West Virginia (WOAY) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the use of red dye No. 3 in food, beverages, and ingested drugs.
The decision comes more than three decades after scientists linked the dye to cancer in animals.
Red dye No. 3 is a synthetic color additive made from petroleum and used to give foods and drinks a bright red color.
Manufacturers using it in food have until January 2027 to reformulate their products.
For ingested drugs, the deadline is a year later.
The requirements also apply to foods imported to the U.S.
Some companies have already stopped using red dye No. 3, while others have begun phasing it out.
California banned it in October 2023.
