Washington, DC (WOAY) – The FBI has a fresh warning for West Virginias when it comes to road toll collection texts.
According to a report from ABC News, The FBI is warning drivers not to respond to collection texts after receiving more than 2,000 complaints this month.
The texts are an attempt to obtain financial information from drivers while posing as state road toll collection agencies using text messaging.
The FBI wants to educate the public on the so-called smishing scams — a form of phishing that relies on text messages to trick people into sending money or share sensitive financial information.
The scam is moving from state to state and the methods that crooks are using is identical claiming that recipients have outstanding toll charges that could result in fines or suspended driving privileges.
The FBI is asking those who receive the scams to file a complaint with its IC3 internet crime complaint center, www.ic3.gov, and to also delete the texts.
