Fayetteville, WV (WOAY) In the year 1924, a group of like-minded women in Fayette County united to cultivate their common interests in the arts, literature, science, and learning of all kinds—and to make an impact in their communities. Now, in 2026, club member Marilyn Montgomery says the women of the Fayette Study Club still carry on their founders’ vision over 100 years later:
“Fayette Study Club is an organization that has been in existence in Fayette County for 102 years. It is a group of women who come from Mount Hope, Fayetteville, and Oak Hill to do good things for the community and to enrich our lives with literary, artistic, and community service activities.”
The group meets every month, and often invites guest speakers to discuss charitable initiatives or give educational demonstrations. Other meetings look like a trip to a local art center or a musical at Oak Hill High School. This Wednesday’s meeting featured Lori Ward from the Fayette Humane Society, who shared about the need for rescue adoptions and volunteers. The club donated $200 to the humane society and started several discussions about volunteering.
Secretary Sadie Brash says that just this year, she and her fellow members have followed a guided yoga demonstration, learned safety precautions from local police officers, and even made socks using their own custom machines:
“I’ve been a member for over 20 years, and I really enjoy getting together with a wonderful group of women. All of us are interested in learning new things going on in the community.”
Beyond learning about everything from the work of the American Chestnut Foundation to at-home cybersecurity, former club president Kathryn Wickline says that the best part of the club is the fellowship:
“The best part here is the women—and the opportunities we have to work with the community and learn more about our community and the needs and try to meet some of those needs. We welcome new members. There’s lots of work to be done. There are lots of needs here in the community. And you won’t find a better bunch of people to work with.”
According to Montgomery, the club had 50 members at its height, and now has around 20. She says that new members are always welcome. Women interested in joining or learning more about the Fayette Study Club can call Marilyn Montgomery at 304-673-1638.
