Fayette County sheriff resigns, accepts job with school board

FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WOAY) – Effective tomorrow, there will be a new sheriff in Fayette County. Current sheriff Mike Fridley will resign and accept a job with Fayette County Schools.

The County Commission will appoint a temporary sheriff during an emergency session tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. There is no indication who they will choose.

Former Fayette County deputy Jess McMullen won the Republican primary in May and is currently unopposed in the general election in November.

In a letter to the residents of Fayette County, Sheriff Fridley said it was his honor to serve the people of Fayette County. He has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 1997 and has been sheriff for the past 8 years.

“There are no words to express the overwhelming local community support for ALL Fayette County Officers serving, and I truly hope everyone knows how appreciative we all are for that, especially in times such as these,” he said. “I hope I have made a difference in someone’s life.“

Newswatch will update you tomorrow on who the county commission names as temporary sheriff.

————————————————————————————————–

It has been my pleasure and honor to serve Fayette County over the last 27 years and 7 months – with two consecutive terms as your Sheriff.  Thank you!  It is hard to believe I began my career here at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office in 1997.  Where has the time gone?

There are no words to express the overwhelming local community support for ALL Fayette County Officers serving and I truly hope everyone knows how appreciative we all are for that especially in times such as these.

Someone asked me with all my years of experience, what is one thing you would say about it or take with you?   “I hope I have made a difference in someone’s life…“

As always, remember the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department is here to serve the citizens of Fayette County and I would place OUR officers amongst the BEST in the State of West Virginia!

In closing, it has been an amazing career and I want to thank God, my family, and all of you who have supported me along this journey, and all the men and women of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.  Good luck to the next Sheriff as the transition becomes effective on August 1, 2024.

In closing, as your Sheriff and until the next opportunity God places in my path, thank you!

With Best Regards-

Mike Fridley
Sheriff of Fayette County
