Mount Carbon, WV(WOAY) A Fayette County man is facing charges in connection with the death of an incapacitated adult.
According to Sheriff Jess McMullen, on March 17 at 8:08 p.m., Fayette County Medical Examiner Scott Corder contacted Fayette County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau deputies to notify them about the death of a 60-year-old female at CAMC.
Based on Corder’s examination, he suspected the deceased woman suffered from neglect, noting severe and deteriorated wounds.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to a Mount Carbon residence after midnight on March 17 in response to a third-party complaint.
The victim was sent to Montgomery General Hospital for treatment and later sent to CAMC due to the severity of her condition.
Upon her arrival, hospital personnel reported the victim showed visible signs of neglect and was in poor condition, suffering from infection and severe wounding.
Authorities discovered the victim’s son, 28-year-old Ryan Curtis Pruett of Mount Carbon, was the victim’s primary caregiver.
The investigation further revealed that Adult Protective Services had been called due to prior concerns about Pruett’s ability to properly care for his mother.
Authorities executed a search warrant at the home, discovering multiple people living in “deplorable conditions.”
The additional residents in the home included three young children, an adult with disabilities, and an elderly man.
Police state the children were found in poor condition, had not been attending school or receiving medical care.
They are currently in the custody of Child Protective Services, and there is now an active investigation into their abuse and neglect.
Detectives found that Pruett gave false statements to police about the care of his mother, with evidence showing she had been denied proper medical care despite her condition.
A third party ultimately contacted emergency services to get medical help for the victim.
Pruett now faces charges of felony death of an incapacitated adult by caregiver and three felony counts of child neglect, creating risk of injury
Pruett currently awaits further court proceedings in Southern Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash bail.
