FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WOAY) – The Fayette County Humane Society that we know is in its final days at the Shelter Road location.
Since they parted ways with the Fayette County Commission, the shelter is ready to start fresh at their new space, to be revealed at a later date.
They shared their plans with me.
It’s a new chapter for the departing FCHS, as they relocate to a different building to get back up and running.
“All we wanted in the beginning was just support, and we couldn’t get that,” said Executive Director Fallyn Wakefield. “So the decision to cut ties and do this on our own wasn’t taken lightly.”
For the past three years, they have dedicated their lives to the shelter for the love of the animals and say they’ll do the same wherever they go next.
“Fayette County has an extremely bad pet overpopulation problem,” Wakefield said. “And with now three rescues in Fayette County, it is going to help the animals that do need the help.”
As painful as the Fayette County Humane Society says this whole experience with the commission has been, being a support and savior for the animals is always their priority.
“We’re going to start at a smaller scale than what we have here,” said the executive director. “But the goal is eventually to have a full-sized facility again and to be able to save more than just a few dogs.”
At their next building, they will be taking animal surrenders and more.
“If there’s of course, an animal on the side of the road that needs help, we’ll be there to help them too,” Wakefield said.
And putting the chaos behind them. I reached out to Fayette County Commission President John Breneman, and he had no comment.
“Someone gets upset, they put something out on social media. It’s not true, and people think it hurts us. It doesn’t hurt us at the end of the day — it hurts the animals — is what it really comes down to,” said Wakefield. “With so many coming in through animal control, we couldn’t take those surrenders. So we’re excited to actually be able to help our community again.”
