FAYETTEVILLE, WV – Fayette County lost a leader, servant, and long-time contributor to youth sports this weekend.
The Fayetteville Fire Department confirmed Greg Fernett’s passing in a Facebook post this afternoon. Condolences have come in from other fire departments and organizations around the county.
“It’s with great sorrow the Fayette County Commissioners announce the loss of their friend and colleague Greg Fernett. Greg joined the Commission in January 2025 and worked tirelessly to support causes close to his heart while still serving the community as a leader in county athletics,” County Commissioners Allison Taylor and John Brenemen said. “He fervently advocated for the people of Fayette County and especially for its children. The Commission and its staff express their deepest condolences to Greg’s loved ones and community members who share in this great loss.”
A first-term member of the Fayette County commission, Fernett was known in the community as a dedicated official for youth sports around West Virginia.
Fernett worked in the mining industry for 35 years.
Funeral details have not been released.
Newswatch would like to express its condolences to Fernett’s family, friends, and fellow county commissioners.
