FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Fayette County Commission unanimously passed a resolution at its meeting today, opposing the demolition of historic structures in the Thurmond area.
The Park Service plans to demolish several historic but dilapidated structures in Thurmond and Prince, including the Prince Brothers General Store.
All three commissioners voted to approve the resolution, which was presented by Holly Clark.
The resolution urges the NPS to pursue preservation and stabilization of the structures instead of demolishing them, and says the county would be happy to partner with the park service to find a way forward.
The park’s demolition plan has been in motion since at least 2023 and has faced pushback from the community. The Park Service says demolishing the structures will help them preserve others, including the iconic commercial row.
The county commission’s resolution acknowledges that the park service has the final say in the matter, but says the county wishes to offer its voice and partnership.
