Fatal accident results in death of a miner at Raleigh County’s Panther Eagle Horse Creek Mine

Raleigh County, WV (WOAY) A miner has died following an accident at a Raleigh County mine.

53-year-old Aaron Warrix of Chapmanville was a shuttle operator with the Panther Eagle Horse Creek Mine, working with the company for four and a half years.

On Thursday, April 2, Warrix was fatally struck by a piece of rock.

State mine safety officials responded to the incident immediately and remain on scene. 

Alpha Metallurgical Resources’ CEO Andy Eidson states, “We are heartbroken to learn of Aaron’s passing,” further saying, “Our hearts are with Aaron’s wife, family, and friends.” 

The mine is operated by Marfork Coal Company, LLC, a subsidiary of Alpha Metallurgical Resources. 

The company is working alongside federal and state agencies to complete an investigation into the accident and its circumstances. 

Governor Patrick Morrisey made a statement today following the tragedy, saying he and his wife, Denise, are “deeply saddened” by the loss.

The governor called him a reflection of the “strength, resilience, and work ethic that define West Virginia.” 

Morrisey is asking West Virginians to keep Warrix’s family, friends, and coworkers in their thoughts and prayers.
