West Virginia (WOAY) As more children and teens spend time online, experts say parents should take an active role in helping them navigate social media safely.
According to the Pew Research Center, 95% of U.S. teens use social media, with nearly half saying they’re online almost constantly.
Experts with the Child Mind Institute say the goal isn’t to eliminate social media but to find a healthy balance.
Parents are encouraged to set clear rules about screen time, privacy, and who their children interact with online.
They should also use parental controls, have open conversations about cyberbullying, scams, and inappropriate content, and periodically check their child’s online activity based on their age and maturity.
Experts say maintaining open communication and teaching responsible online habits can help children safely enjoy the benefits of social media while avoiding potential risks.
