It has been another mostly sunny and pleasant day around the region. Highs wound up in the lower 80s area-wide – a few degrees above the normal.
Tonight, temperatures will be closer to the seasonal normal tonight, mostly in the middle 50s. More of the same is in the forecast tomorrow afternoon. It will be great weather for our Fabulous Football Friday games! For our Game of the Week, temperatures will start in the middle to upper 70s at kickoff and will drop into the lower to middle 60s by the end of the game. We probably won’t even need the jackets at the end of the game as we head home.
The weekend will feature fairly nice weather, but it will be somewhat more unsettled. A backdoor cold front (meaning one that is coming from the northeast instead of the more traditional northwest direction) is going to push into the region. It will trigger some showers in the eastern portions of the area, particularly in the Greenbrier Valley.
While we could see a tenth or a quarter of an inch, it won’t be enough to alleviate the drought. The latest index came out today, and parts of Pocahontas and Nicholas Counties are in Extreme Drought – the second highest level. Much of the northern and northeastern parts of the area are just one level of drought lower – they’re in Severe Drought.
As we go through the last few days of the extended forecast and beyond, the rain chances get much better, as a surface low-pressure center moves towards the area. In the middle levels of the atmosphere, a low over the upper Midwest will trigger some showers and storms, mainly to our west, although some of these will spill into the area. With little movement of the low, chances for rain will last for several days, which will help the drought situation somewhat.
