OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was another nice day around the region, with highs in the lower 80s and plenty of sunshine. Basically, it’s a carbon copy of yesterday and the day before, with the temperatures ticking up a degree or so each day.
Tonight, we’ll see warmer temperatures again, as lows will only drop into the lower to mid-60s. If there is any difference in the weather today compared to the previous couple of days, it’s the breeze and the extra humidity. That’s not unusual to see before a front arrives.
Tomorrow, that front will be on our doorstep, and we’ll begin to see a chance for showers and storms, especially by the afternoon and evening.
Some of the storms will be on the strong side, but damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are not threats this time, although gusty winds might accompany one or two of the storms. The big concern for us is the possibility for flooding. The northern and western parts of the area are in the Level 2 out of 4 risk for severe storms, meaning that there is a 15 – 40% chance to see the amount of rain needed to cause flash flooding. The rest of the area is in the Level 1 out of 4, meaning that there is a less than 15% chance to see the amount of rain needed to cause flash flooding.
Any flooding that does occur will be localized, mainly standing water in low-lying spots and ponding water on roads. Travelers should be careful as they head out. With the extra cloud cover, highs will be a shade cooler, in the lower 80s. Lows Thursday night will also be a bit cooler as the front comes through.
A definite pattern shift begins with the Thursday front, as a series of disturbances will push though the region, keeping chances for rain in the forecast. The only dry day once the rain starts will be Monday. Overall, the rain totals will be fairly uniform and will generally be at least a half inch, with many areas picking up more than 1″ of rain over the next seven days. If we get that spread over a week it won’t produce too many issues, but if we see more or if we see it at one time, there could be flooding.
The one thing that won’t be changing over the next seven days will be the temperatures. Highs will be in the lower 80s, and lows will be in the lower to mid-60s.
