Beckley, WV (WOAY) – In recent weeks, there have been incidents of ATVs being hit by cars.
An elderly Charleston man on a mobility scooter was killed.
The summer weather is looking nicer every day, and that means more ATV’s, side by sides out on the roadways.
“What ultimately comes down to the tour operators of these ATVs. They need to make sure they’re aware of where they’re going and what they’re doing, and drive extra carefully and make sure they defer to any other traffic, said SRHSP Regional Coordinator Sgt. Jamie Wilhite.
According to Wilhite, the side-by-side seems to be a little more cautious and because they’re driving with traffic in the traffic lanes, at least the ones that are registered and insured or should be.
“But the ATVs may pop out of the trail onto a side road,” the sergeant said. “We’ve seen them here just speeding down the middle of the traffic lane on Robert C Byrd Drive. Super dangerous and super dangerous for the ATV operator. You know, an ATV is not going to do well against a Ford F-150.”
