Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – As kids start lining up for the school bus again, drivers should remember that it is dangerous and illegal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing lights and extended signs.
Last school year, a speeding driver nearly hit a child getting off a bus in Kanawha County.
That driver was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and passing a school bus.
Breaking the law even one time carries serious penalties. For a first-time offense, there is a minimum $500 fine, a maximum fine of $1,000, or confinement in jail of up to six months.
Last school year, some local law agencies stepped up patrols and enforcement after local bus drivers raised concerns over drivers speeding past school buses.
According to the Oak Hill Deputy Chief of Police, officers are concerned first and foremost with keeping kids safe.
